Korean - Ryongkido is a Korean art that means "Way of Dragon Energy" founded by Park Kee Youl around mid 900 A.D. Through the years, Korea had many invasions and wars, Ryongkido thrived, but got influenced. Russian - Sambo (used to be known as "Sam" and "Samoz") is a Russian military combat art and is short for "Samooborona Bezoruzhiya" which means "Self Defense without weapons." Sambo was created in the early 20th century by "B.S. Oshepkov" from his training in different arts including (but not limited too) Judo, Greco-Roman wrestling, Freestyle wrestling and many different grappling arts. There are 2 parts to Sambo, the first is Combat Sambo, which is the self-defense. The other is Sport Sambo, which is the known international sport (obviously). Competitions take place in a western-style wrestling mat. There are 2 styles of Combat Sambo, those that are taught to the Russian soldiers and employ techniques common to that of the sport and "ROSS" which isn't all that different. Fitness takes a big role and the younger and stronger the better they are.

Chinese - San Shou Kung Fu (a.k.a. "Sanda" and NOT to be confused with "San Soo") is a fairly new Kung Fu sport. It is a complete art that encompasses unarmed combat in striking, knees, elbows, sweeps, catches, grappling, wrestling, ground fighting, weapon defense, so basically... everything. It uses standard kicks and punches then uses entrapment, which is followed by throws and takedowns. A sport version was developed during the 1960's and is, for the most part, a kickboxing style. In order to do this some of the great masters from all over China came together and organized all of the Chinese arts and heritage into a system of rules, so that all styles could compete.

Japanese - Sengoku Jujutsu is not an art, but a general description. Many methods of combat were being developed in the Heian period (794-1185 CE). There are many different arts and names like Kogusoku, Yawara, and Kumiuchi are a couple, but they all fall into a general description called Sengoku Jujutsu. All arts that were unarmed grappling or lightly armed grappling systems. Methods of combat include joint locking, throwing, pinning and strangling. Japanese - Shindo Yoshin Ryu is a Japanese art created by Katsunosuke Matsuoka in the late 1800's. He was a student in the Yoshin Ryu dojo of Hirotsuke Totsuka. He also studied Jikishin Kage Ryu, Hokushin Itto Ryu, and Tenjin Shinyo Ryu. He founded this new jujutsu system based on his yoshin ryu knowledge and added techniques from other disciplines. The 5 major methods of technical study are: 1) Suburi - sword swinging drills 2) Tanrengata - solo forms 3) Battoho - combative drawing and cutting methods 4) Tachiuchi - sparring 5) Tameshigiri/Shizan - cutting straw and bambu targets. Students usually train with a Bokuto, or wooden sword, and advance with Iaito, non-sharpened sword, and finally they move to Shinken, or live blade. Shinkendo requires rigorous physical training, but the most important aspect is spiritual forging, which inspires the warrior spirit (called "Bushi Damashii").

Japanese - Shito Ryu Karate (originally called "Hanko Ryu" (meaning "half-hard style")) was founded by "Kenwa Mabuni" in the early 1900's. Mabuni trained in Shorin Ryu, Uechi Ryu, Naha Te and bo fighting. Shito Ryu is often described at a combination of Shotokan and Goju Ryu, but it looks a lot like Shorin Ryu in application. It is similar to Shotokan in that it relies heavily on the revers punch and front kick. It places a strong emphasis on sparring and stresses speed in doing so. The style has 40 to 60 katas so a lot of time is spent perfecting forms.

Shorin Ryu (sho-rin rue)
Japanese - Shorin Ryu (a.k.a. "Itosu Ha") is a complicated one. Karate started in Okinawa and was known as "Te" (meaning "hand"). It continued to develop over time and primarily in 3 Okinawan cities: Shuri, Naha, and Tomari. Each of these citites had a different section of people (nobles, farmers, etc.) so each had a little different version. They became known as Shuri Te, Naha Te, and Tomari Te and collectively called Okinawa Te or Tode (Chinese hand). Gradually, karate was divided into 2 main groups: Shorin Ryu (developed around Shuri and Tomari) and Shorei Ryu (developed around Naha). It was in the late 1800's that Shuri Te began to be called Shorin Ryu. Today there are 4 main styles, Goju Ryu, Shorin Ryu, Shotokan, and Wado Ryu. Shorin Ryu is a popular art today and has many sub-systems under it.

Shuai Chiao
Chinese - Shuai Chiao ("swhy jow") (a.k.a. "Shuai Jiao", "Swai Chiao", "Swai Jiao", and "Chiao Ti") means "Throwing - Horns" and it was referred to as "Chiao Ti" in books that date back to 1000 B.C. It is a Chinese combat form of grappling/wrestling that mainly uses throws and takedowns, but strikes and kicks are incorporated as well. The defensive techniques first blend with the attack, then overcome, and then retaliate. In the beginning you start off learning throws and then work your way into striking. The throws are demonstrated from a punch, kick, or grab attack that is countered with "Chin Na" (joint-locking techniques), and then the throw. Sumo (sue-moe)
Japanese - Sumo (originally "Sumai", meaning "struggle") is a Japanese are that began around 20 B.C. as a military art. Sumai used most of the same techniques, but had an assortment of strikes as well (resembling Indian and Mongolian wrestling). Before the 16th century almost all wrestling was practiced for battle. Evolving after, adding rules, ranks, a ring, and becoming a sport, it became known as Sumo. The water ceremony, costumes, and the costumes are all remainders of the ancient military traditions. The winner is the first to make the other have a body part above the knee to touch the floor or force the opponent out of the ring. Techniques range from Tsuppari (slapping), Ketaguri (sweeps), and many Utchari (throws).
